Arm PPC with their hands

For a start, it is worth learning this: GAZ-21 is not a toy, but a car that requires care, attention, investment, time and effort. And the financial cost of maintaining it is no less than the maintenance and servicing of a modern car. And the difficulties are different.

Often, motorists pay attention to the very heavy management of the GAZ-21. This is a little wrong. Yes, indeed, the management process of the Volga is very different from driving other cars, as a rule, due to the unusual location of most of the controls. In addition, some car controls are quite specific. Figure 1 shows the control panel of a fully authentic machine:

The positions of the lever are shown in Figure 2:

As you can see, in fact, not everything is as difficult as some describe. Just a little practice is needed.

In general, the problematic of the GAZ-21 is somewhat contrived. Why? Consider the main claims to the car, which are simply common myths: Myth number 1: tight steering wheel

It may seem strange, but on new GAZ models, even on the most modern ones (except for models with hydraulic booster), it is harder to turn the steering wheel than on the GAZ-21. Here we must take into account the considerable diameter of the steering wheel, careful calculation of the gear ratio of the steering mechanism and a small wheel base. All this makes steering relatively easy. Of course, if we compare the Volga with Kalina or any foreign car, their superiority is obvious. But we are talking about a full-size sedan, whose length is about 5 meters, and which, by no means, does not claim to be a ladies' car. Myth number 2: gear lever located on the steering wheel and only three gears create inconvenience in driving

On all Volga, with rare exceptions, there is a three-speed gearbox with a control lever on the steering shaft. However, the effort applied to the gear shift mechanism (if it is, of course, in good condition) is minimal, and the driver’s hands are always on the steering wheel. For most drivers, this is much more convenient than reaching for a lever on the floor.
As for the three gears, this number reduces the number of switching and facilitates management. Slowdown and acceleration can be performed without shifting gears, but using excellent engine tractive qualities. Maintenance of a four-stage gearbox with a gear lever on the floor is more difficult, more laborious and, in the event of a failure, requires the purchase of expensive spare parts. While the “native” PPC shows tremendous resiliency and durability.

Yes, we should not forget that such a gearbox is a kind of GAZ-21 business card, without which the car will immediately lose its unique style. Myth number 3: the dynamics of the car is just awful

Here you need to understand that the dynamics - this is not the main advantage of any car, affecting the choice. Yes, indeed, there are certain problems with accelerating dynamics of the GAZ-21. But at the same time the car is quite suitable for movement in the city in modern conditions. By the way, if we talk about the third series, then the “Volga” with a working engine of 75 hp in terms of its dynamics, it approaches the classical models of VAZ, surpassing the Eye and the Niva. Myth number 4: inefficient brake system

GAZ-21, as well as all Volga cars produced before the year 90, was equipped with a drum-type brake system. Of course, disc brakes are much more efficient, but taking into account the speeds developed by GAZ-21, the performance of a regular brake system (in good condition) is quite acceptable. Moreover, in the case of installing a vacuum brake booster from a GAZ-24 car, the efficiency of the brakes is increased many times over. Myth number 5: high fuel consumption

This is fundamentally wrong - in fact, GAZ-21 consumes no more gasoline than modern GAZ models. In any case, with a good engine, this is actually the case. Average fuel consumption when driving in city mode ranges from 12.5 to 15 liters per hundred kilometers. On the highway, this figure is much lower - about 10.5 liters per hundred. Well, it is quite acceptable for such a large and heavy car.

But do not think that there are no problems with the Volga at all. They are available, and we must be ready for this. And now let's talk about real problems.
