Nobel Peace Prize 2018

Both laureates have made a crucial contribution to focusing attention on, and combating, war crimes. Denis Mukwege is the helper who has devoted his life to defending these victims. Nadia Murad is the witness who tells of the abuses perpetrated against herself and others. Each of them in their own way has helped to give greater visibility to war-time sexual violence, so that the perpetrators can be held accountable for their actions.

The Prize in Economic Sciences 2018

This year’s Laureates have designed methods for addressing some of our time’s most basic and pressing questions about how we create long-term sustained and sustainable economic growth. Their contributions provide us with fundamental insights into the causes and consequences of technological innovation and climate change.

The Prize in Economic Sciences 2018 has been awarded to William D. Nordhaus "for integrating climate change into long-run macroeconomic analysis" and Paul M. Romer "for integrating technological innovations into long-run macroeconomic analysis." Their findings have significantly broadened the scope of economic analysis by constructing models that explain how the market economy interacts with nature and knowledge.

This year three new women joined the list of inspirational female laureates that have made our world a better place.

From Nadia Murad, campaigning to end sexual violence in war, and Frances Arnold, who conducted the first directed evolution of enzymes, to Donna Strickland, whose work revolutionised laser technology - these are women who changed the world.

In memoriam

Osamu Shimomura passed away on 19 October. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2008 for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein, GFP, a protein that has become one of the most important tools used in contemporary bioscience.

Osamu Shimomura

Thomas A. Steitz was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2009 for the crystallographic determination of ribosome structures at high resolution and for the skilful use of these structures to clarify fundamental and medically important aspects of ribosome function. He passed away on 9 October, age 78.

Thomas A. Steitz

Physics Laureate Leon Lederman  was awarded the 1988 Physics Prize for the neutrino beam method and the discoveries made using this, discoveries that opened entirely new opportunities for research into the innermost structure and dynamics of matter. He passed away on 3 October.

Leon M. Lederman

Physics Laureate Charles Kao passed away on 23 September. His discoveries have paved the way for optical fiber technology, which today is used for almost all telephony and data communication.
