I am hosting my daughter’s Bas Mitzvah with a fairly chic crowd of about 200. It’s an afternoon affair on a Saturday in February. Since I lean toward the irrelevant side of fashionable dress, I was considering a winter white formal dinner jacket with a proper tux shirt and a black silk tie. The guests will be in their best day suits and dresses. Will I stand out as a self-indulgent dolt, or can I get away with this attire?
I think winter white is for the ladies, or for the military on ski patrol. I have always felt that Tom jacket Wolfe belongs to some Eastern religion. And if everyone else will be wearing suits, I think perhaps as host you should—I was going to write “follow suit.“ Well, there! I did. This is not to say you must blend into the wallpaper. Maybe you could wear a very luxurious silk suit. If you’re a Scottish Jew, you could wear a kilt. I think maybe you should just dress very nicely and let your daughter have the spotlight in its entirety. Then, once June 22 rolls around, you can throw yourself an It’s Winter in the Southern Hemisphere party and wear your white dinner jacket.
